Partly due to our work in early childhood, but also because of our long time interest in alternative education, we often muse about the notion of ‘preparing children’ for ‘the future’, the ‘real world’, ‘work’, ‘university’ or ‘adulthood’. In the last few weeks we have seen significant change that is impacting on the way in which the world is structured (quite literally). What can we do as adults, teachers, parents or carers to ‘prepare’ children for the changing world? And, as this current situation demonstrates, this preparation is not for ‘the future’ it is for now. Children and young people are living with these changes today – and are impacted upon by them. It is not only adults who are needing to cope with the changes.
